Top Tips for Coping with Load Shedding

It’s no surprise that South Africa ended the year, not with a bang, but with a whimper, huddled around candles and load shedding returning with a vengeance. With the ever-present threat of load shedding looming overhead, it’s not the empty promises that’ll see us through these dark and trying times. We’ve got some top tips and tricks to help you cope when the power goes out.

If the power doesn’t come to you, go to it!

Sometimes you simply can’t afford to do without electricity, and that’s totally fair. Our lives can’t be put on hold sometimes as we wait for the power grid to get its act together. At the Rockwell Hotel, our generators keep us running through the blackouts, so visitors won’t be interrupted. Come pay us a visit to work (we have free wifi!) or enjoy our cafe and bar for delicious steaks, burgers, and other modern comfort foods. You can wash away the bitter taste of load-shedding with some sweet signature cocktails!

Get fit and active.

When the power goes off and there’s little else to do or distract you from your responsibilities, there’s really no excuse not to make the most of your free time and take up a new sport or get out and exercise. Gyms have generators to keep the equipment running, and in the daylight, Cape Town is brimming with opportunities and locations to enjoy the great outdoors.

Keep your mobile devices charged and ready

Your mobile phone is your constant companion and your connection to the rest of the world! Don’t let load shedding catch you with your battery life in the red and keep your devices charged. You can even keep a movie or some of your favourite series stored on your device to give you something to watch while you wait for the lights to come back on.

Tip: invest in a power bank charger to help you keep your devices charged even through the longest blackouts.

Stock up on candles and lanterns.

No one likes sitting in the dark, and it can make for a rather unsettling, uncomfortable atmosphere. But with strategically placed candles and lanterns around the house, you can enjoy the warm, comforting glow of candlelight throughout your home.

Stay up to date with a load shedding schedule.

Surprises are rarely good, especially when it comes to electricity. A blackout you’ve prepared for is far easier to wait out than one where you’re caught unawares and underprepared. You can check out some of the best load shedding apps on the app store, like EskomSePush (a favourite amongst South African’s for some tongue in cheek humour) or the LoadShedding Notifier.

Prepare your meals beforehand.

Ordering in and going out for dinner all add up to a hefty strain on your wallet. If you don’t have a gas oven, it’s helpful to prepare your dinner or lunch before the expected power cut, or opt for cold dinners like salads and sandwiches. Just remember to keep opening the fridge door to a minimum to keep your food fresh.

Improve your quality of life with a new hobby.

Finding something you’re passionate about can really enrich your life, and even more so if it’s something you have to work on and hone. With the power going off more often than coming back on, we’re over-encumbered with free time, free time that can be spent taking up a new craft or hobby, like knitting, drawing, writing or crafting. So why not look into one of these avenues and explore your craftier side.

Get back in touch with your friends and family

With the amount of time we spend on our devices or in front of the TV, we’ve lost touch with the people around us. Organise to spend time with the people closest to you during load shedding by going out together or playing some board games at home. It’s the best time to disconnect from the digital and connect with our loved ones!
